Speech Class Rules, from local Speech Language Pathologist and Author, Ronda Wojcicki M.S.CCC-SLP

By Macaroni Kid West Morris May 1, 2019

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) – the time of year when the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and their approximately 200,000 members take the opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders.  Local pediatric Speech Language Pathologist Ronda Wojcicki M.S.CCC-SLP of Long Valley is no exception.  A pediatric Speech Language Pathologist for almost 19 years, Ronda has spent her career not only assessing and treating communication disorders, but also working to break down negative stereotypes sometimes associated with special needs – something she is very passionate about.

Ronda wrote and published Speech Class Rules – An Introduction to Speech Therapy for Children with the vision to educate everyone from children to their teachers and parents about communication disorders that affect approximately 1 in 10 children. In the story, a young girl reflects on her journey from diagnosis to dismissal in a humorous tale that shows that the unknown can be fun and that everyone needs a little help with something.Follow up discussion questions are provided at the end for both home and school settings.  Speech Class Rules won a Moonbeam Award, as well as the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award and was also recognized by former ASHA President Dr. Tommie Robinson for raising awareness nationwide.Ronda has participated in educator talks, school readings, and library events throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 2018, she partnered with Northern Speech Services to research perceptions of children in speech therapy and methods to improve a child’s experience throughout those services.  She hopes that her findings will drive more interactive experiences between general education students and special needs students as a direct result of her work.
