What to do in the Case of a Dental Trauma

By Pediatric Dental Associates of Randolph April 1, 2022

As the weather gets nicer and kids become more active outside, the incidence of dental trauma also increases.  In fact, 30-40% of all children will experience a dental emergency at some point. With this in mind, in the event of trauma to your child’s teeth, here are some guidelines to follow until you can see a dentist:

If your child falls face-first and you see a lot of blood, first determine that the accident only affected their teeth and there aren’t any more serious injuries that would require a trip to the emergency room.

For Baby Teeth

After a baby tooth is injured, a dentist’s strategy for treatment is to minimize the potential for damage to the permanent tooth developing beneath.

• Apply firm pressure with gauze to lessen bleeding

•  Do not try to place the tooth back into the socket as this can damage the permanent tooth underneath

For Permanent Teeth

• If a tooth is chipped, do your best to find the fragment and store it in a plastic bag until you’re able to come to the office.

• Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the part that is usually visible in the mouth), being careful not to touch the root. Rinse off the tooth, but resist the urge to scrape or scrub it clean.

•Place the tooth back into the socket the right way and have your child bite on gauze to hold it in place until getting to the dental office.

•If you can’t get the tooth properly into its spot, have your child hold the tooth in their cheek so the saliva will keep the root clean and moist.
