Brushing Harder is NOT Brushing Better

By Pediatric Dental Associates of Randolph July 14, 2023

If your child is brushing vigorously, don’t be misled by their enthusiasm to get the job done for a job well done.  While your child may think their teeth will be extra clean by brushing with more pressure, aggressive brushing can actually do more harm than good.

SIGNS OF BRUSHING TOO HARD

Using too much force can cause a variety of problems including:

• eroding tooth enamel • tooth sensitivity • bleeding and receding gums

TOOTHBRUSH TELLS ALL

One way to tell if your child is brushing too hard is to check their toothbrush.  If it is relatively new and the bristles are worn and flattened that is a sign they are using too much pressure.

BETTER BRUSHING

Encourage your child to brush more effectively by using an age appropriate, soft bristled toothbrush. Model good brushing techniques for your child. Begin by holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and using a gentle, circular motion, brush a small group of teeth at a time. This is the best way to reach all areas, including the outsides, insides, and chewing surfaces.
