While swimming is a must for summertime fun, the effects of too much chlorine can be bad for teeth. Too much chlorine in your pool can make water more acidic, which can damage tooth enamel. This damage can lead to a number of issues, including:
- Enamel erosion
- Swimmer's calculus
- Teeth staining
Keep teeth safe from the effects of chlorine by following these tips:
1. Limit time
Try not to spend too much time in chlorinated water.
2. Test the water
Use pH strips to check the water’s acidity before swimming. The CDC recommends a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8.
3. Be mindful
Keep your mouth closed as much as possible to reduce exposure. Rinse your mouth with water after swimming to remove any remaining pool water.
4. Practice good oral hygiene
Brush and floss your teeth after swimming to remove any chlorine.
