Halloween is a fun time for kids, but it can also be tough on their teeth! At Pediatric Dental Associates of Randolph, we want to help you navigate the candy chaos while keeping those smiles bright. Here are some tips on which candies are better for your kids' dental health, along with ways to maintain good oral hygiene throughout the spooky season.
Candy Choices: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Better Choices:
- Chocolate: Especially dark chocolate! It dissolves quickly and doesn’t stick to teeth.
- Nuts: Nut-based candies can provide some nutritional value and won’t linger on teeth.
Avoid:
- Sticky Candies: Gummy bears, taffy, and caramels can cling to teeth and lead to cavities.
- Sour Candies: High in acid, these can erode tooth enamel.
- Chewy Candies: They often stick to teeth, increasing the risk of decay.
Tips for Keeping Teeth Healthy During Halloween
- Set a Candy Limit: Help your kids enjoy their candy without going overboard. Choose a few favorites and store the rest for later.
- Encourage a Rinse: After enjoying sweets, have your kids rinse their mouths with water to help wash away sugar.
- Regular Brushing: Ensure your children brush their teeth twice a day and floss daily, especially after indulging in candy.
- Stay Hydrated: Encourage water intake, which helps rinse away sugar and bacteria.
Post-Halloween Candy Donation
Our office will be collecting extra Halloween candy through November 15th! Bring in your kids' leftover treats, and we’ll donate them to first responders, Navy seamen serving overseas, kids in hospitals who couldn’t trick-or-treat, and local assisted living facilities. By choosing the right candies and maintaining good dental hygiene, you can help your kids enjoy Halloween without sacrificing their smiles. Visit us after Halloween to donate your extra candy, and let’s spread some sweetness in our community!
