What is SDF and why is it a cavity's worst nightmare?
Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF as it is commonly referred, is a clear liquid that a dentist can paint onto a tooth’s cavity which literally stops the cavity from growing.
When is SDF recommended?
While the ideal way to treat tooth decay is by removing the decay, because SDF stops the decay in a noninvasive way it may be ideal for the following types of patients:
•Patients with small decay in baby teeth
•Young children who are unable to sit still for treatment
•Patients with developmental disabilities
•Children with many cavities that cannot be treated at one appointment
Benefits of SDF
•Stops tooth decay from progressing
•Relieves tooth sensitivity
•Enables invasive treatment to be delayed
Although SDF possesses the power to halt a cavity’s spread, the down side is that the application of the material turns the tooth black where applied.
